CDD « Radiography of the Past »

In the framework of the Marie Curie/People Academia Industry project “Radiography of the Past” (GA 230679; https://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/mariecurieactions/iapp_en.html), a recruitment is opened for a contract of 12 months of an experienced researcher in spatial and digital data management, CAD and visualization of topographical and structural data from archaeological sites.
The purpose of this project (acronym “Radio-Past”) is to develop methods for the non-destructive survey of complex archaeological sites (www.radiopast.eu). This will be partly achieved by way of an intensive case study aimed at investigating the topography of the Roman city site of Ammaia in Portugal. During year 3 of the grant, an external expert will be recruited to integrate and process a wide variety of archaeological data collected in the framework of the project, in Ammaia and elsewhere.
The postholder will be an experienced researcher in the field of computer assisted spatial data processing (GIS) and digital data management, with some additional experience in 3D reconstructions, modeling and possibly museum presentation of the scientific results from a variety of non-destructive archaeological surveys. This specialist will be a key figure in the translation of the spatial and volumetric data achieved with the fieldwork to the wider public.
Candidates are requested to hold a PhD in Archaeology, digital technologies or Computer Assisted Design applied to archaeology (or 4 years equivalent experience) and have extensive experience in spatial data management and technical analysis and mapping of ancient monuments, preferably in a Southern European (Roman period) environment.
As the recruitment is inserted in the Marie Curie Actions Mobility scheme, candidates can be all nationals, but Portuguese.
Following the guidelines of the European Commission’s Roadmap for Equality between Women and Men (2007) and of the European Council’s Pact for Gender Equality (2006), the management staff of the project Radio-Past committed to the effort of improving the representation of women in the European Research area, and therefore specifically invites applications by women.

Spatial Analysis Applied to Archaeological Sites from Protohistory to the Roman Period

Location / Lieu : Het Pand, Ghent (Belgium) / Het Pand, Gand (Belgique)

Concept / Concept : Spatial location is an intrinsic dimension of the archaeological data: every artefact, every structure and every site is located somewhere … From the isolated object to the region, the spatial
component appears in all scales of analysis. Spatial analysis of artefacts or structures, whether intra- or inter-site, examines the specific arrangement of archaeological remains as well as their
organization and their relations; in this way, it contributes to the description and to the interpretation of sites and their context.

Spatial analysis, at the crossroads of various disciplines, already has a long history, with some key moments such as the emergence of the New Archaeology in the 1960s. During the last two decades,
spatial analysis experienced a revival thanks to the introduction of geographical information systems (GIS).

This workshop will focus on the methodological aspects of intra- and intersite spatial archaeology and archaeological applications on Protohistory and the Roman period in Europe.

Europe.

About fifteen communications will be planned (each 30 min.) with at least twice a day a session for discussion.

The selected applications (oral communication or poster) will be published at the end of 2011.
